Shit My Dad Says coming to TV on CBS
Okay, so this is maybe not the most outrageous thing I have ever heard, but as someone who tries to sell stuff to Hollywood it is a little galling. The Twitter account ShitMyDadSays, which I wrote about a couple of months ago speculating that it was made up, has been picked up as a sitcom by CBS. This will be developed by the creators of Will and Grace, so it has a shot
And you know, this isn't the first Twitter account to be optioned, apparently an account called TextsFromLastNight is being developed for Sony by Adam Sandler's company.
Twitter accounts? Really? Seriously? This is what it takes? ShitMyDadSays creator Justin Halpern has barely written two paragraphs, and somebody saw enough in that to want to option it or is it tjust that the account has 700,000 plus followers? Is TV THAT desperate?
Or, is it as I surmised, that the entire thing was made up from the get go for the express purposes of getting a book or movie deal. All I know is that this Halpern guy doesn't produce his dad if this thing goes to series, then we're all going to know the thing was bullshit. And if it does end up having been a big fake is that going to invalidate the whole thing? I mean, it is funny, but the thing that sells it is that these are real ramblings of some cranky old man whose layabout son does nothing but sit around transcribing his dad's fewer than 139 character ramblings.
And, if the Dad IS real, well, shouldn't HE be getting the option money?
I am so in the wrong business.
